Moonbird
Why they're different
Organic cotton, Fair Trade, environmentally friendly dyes
Our sleepwear is made using GOTS certified organic cotton. Our jersey strappy and loose tops contain a hidden support layer which is made from 95% cotton and 5% lycra. This is the only part of our range which is not 100% organic at this point and something we are actively working on. It's all about supply!
Our fabrics are printed by hand by artisans in India and all dyes are GOTS certified, AZO free, colour fast and environmentally friendly.
We aim to support small scale artists and designers by collaborating on prints each season as well as designing in-house.
ETHICAL PARTNERS
At Moonbird we are committed to producing our sleepwear in an ethical and transparent way. The Mehera Shaw production facility we use in Jaipur, India is a member of the Fair Trade Federation.
Ethical organisations we are associated with:
ORGANIC
Organic cotton is cotton grown without the use of pesticides and fertilizers. In developing countries cotton may account for 50% of total pesticide use. Accidental pesticide poisoning is common among farmers, and the cost of buying the pesticides can cause some farmers to be so in debt that they take their own lives. The pesticides and fertilizers used in conventional cotton production can cause skin irritations and be carcinogenic.
Here are 5 main reasons why organic is better:
VEGAN
We believe that in our business we need to respect people, planet and animals therefore we do not use animal products in our collections. We will be gaining our international vegan accreditation soon.
NO WASTAGE
We’re always looking for ways to reduce our footprint on this earth, so when we realised there were small amounts of wastage when cutting out our 100% organic cotton jersey tops we decided we needed to find a use for the off cuts so that they weren't destined for the rubbish bin.
We had noticed a lack of reasonably priced organic children’s underwear and felt that this could be a good product to introduce. The underwear is only made from the off cuts that would have ended up eventually in landfill. Small amounts of left over fabric mean that the production runs are small and we will only produce them alongside the production of our tops, so when they’re gone they’re gone!
CLIMATE FRIENDLY
We are working with Climate Friendly to offset our carbon emissions from freight, travel and waste. This year we are proud to be carbon neutral in Australia and will work towards offsetting our manufacturing process over the next few years.

Here are 5 main reasons why organic is better:
- It allows farmers to make enough money to live on by reducing their expenses and giving them a 20% premium on their sales.
- It eliminates toxins in our environment, which means it’s better for farmers, better for animals, better for us.
- Diversity allows farmers to grow food crops to feed themselves. Conventional cotton is grown as a monoculture (meaning it’s the only crop grown) which means farmers have to buy all their own food, and if the crop fails they are left with nothing.
- Organic cotton is often rain fed not irrigated as in conventional cotton farming therefore it uses less water.
- By eliminating the use of pesticides and fertilizers the process of growing organic cotton produces 94% less greenhouse gas emissions.
